Visit toSalt Lake City by an early US President

Does anyone have any info regarding the visit of an early US President (possibly Buchannan)who was so impressed by the well mannered folks in Salt Lake that he made the comment that he had been deceived into believing otherwise about Mormons?

It twarn't Buchanan.

Buchanan was the one that sic'd Johnston's army on the Mormons.

I think Charles Dickens made such a comment when he saw how orderly the Mormons were aboard the ships headed for America.

Whatever else you can say about the Mormons they are good at organizing things.

Mebbe that is why I never fit in. I am not real organized.

No doubt the early Mormons were Dickensian.

i.e. desperately poor and comical.
