What music do you like?

I am enjoying 20's jazz and bands today. Specifically Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra at archive.org

Ken Burns' documentary in 2000, then Napster, set me on this path.

I collected music from 1899-1939.

Al Bowlly Sundays are a tradition at the Hurry household.

I usually enjoy classical music, but lately I've been digging up old rock heroes on YouTube. The Rolling Stones, for example, whom I find disgusting at times but also extremely interesting in the context of their generation. And IMHO, anything good by the Stones is very, very old. Like 1982 at the latest, following a steep decline after 1972.

I suppose I actually like Led Zeppelin better, but the Stones manage to push all my buttons: fear, pain, pleasure, power, and their own unique brand of subtle, perverted grandiosity. Definitely a huge historical phenomenon. I wish they were gone.

Sorry, I meant that I wish they would quit touring, and let their 73-year-old centimillionaire drummer retire and live in peace on his estate with his horses.

I'm not anxious for anyone to die. Not like those atheists, eh?

I enjoy a broad range. Sometimes it's ragtime piano and others it may be techno. It's never motab or anything like it, though. I can't stand religious music.

Music was my only friend 2 miles outta town.

I used to hate my mom, first off for 6 years of forced piano lessons.

Then I was granted my big sister's old trombone.

In the meanwhile......KOMA in Oklahoma City .

50,000 watts of salvation!

Heard my first listen to the 'beetles' thereupon, as an example.

Country music was everywhere as well, and the good old Hank stuff caught my ear.

Remember Patsy? I loved her.

And then Nashville went to heqq for a while. Until Waylon, Billy and Willie showed me it's ok to be different.

However, thanks to two older sisters attending the Why .....they would bring home their old albums which were of course new to me.

Kingston Trio
Bob whatzisname Dylan
Smothers Brothers
Jao Gilberto with Stan Getz

They stand out, but
the list went on.....

They then brought home this crazy white dude playing blues.....

Anyone in Provo still dig Mose?

I still find comfort in classical good stuff....hymns even.

Anything that's tune worthy grabs me by the ears.

And thanks to two hip sisters who brought me home the fresh cutting-edge stuff from Provo ....all those ears ago.

Okay,
we are really enjoying listening to your music now too too!

60's surfing music are also among our favorites too. We are now enjoying Al Bowlly and Mose Allison (new to us)
Another old 20's tune that we like is sung by tenor John McCormack
song " A Garden in the Rain" (hope it is okay to refer to www.archive.org/
or

Thanks for sharing
Cheers

that you are having your own Al Bowlly Sunday!

I collected a lot of pre-1925 tunes in the Napster and audioGnome days. Pre-1925 tunes are no longer subject to copyright and can be freely disseminated. Drop me a line:

Thank you for the invite, don't have an email available.
If you are interested, there is a 20's jazz collection at archive.org > audio > Music > 78 rpm collection; maybe you would enjoy sharing with them?

I'm jumping in on the "eclectic" wagon.

I was a weird little kid ('70's & '80's) because I was addicted to old movie musicals, big band and show tunes. I knew all of the words to "Chattanooga Choo Choo" by the time I was 5. My dad had a huge collection of big band and jazz music. I still love all of it.

The only pop music in the house were a few 45's of The Beetles and my sister's disco music.

I hit my teens in the '80's so there were the standard: Heaven 17, The Style Council, Crowded House, Paul Young, Howard Jones, Roman Holiday, The Smiths, The Smithereens, The Clash, U2, Kate Bush, Bjork (in The Sugarcubes) etc.

Now, I just like what I like. I'll always love jazz, classical, Tori Amos and others...but thanks to my own teenagers I've added: Daniel and the Lion, PHOX, The Miserable Rich, Laura Mvula, Pentatonix, Frou Frou, Florence and the Machine, Sara Bareilles, Katie Noonan (one of the purest vocalists in the world) and more.

I like the idea that you never stop growing and adding to the things that bring you joy--especially music. :-)

I'll never forget my first and only Led Zep concert.

Page fiddled, Plant drooped... and after only 20 minutes of thus, Bonham fell off the stool .... passed out.

End of show, Phoenix Coliseum 1970. True story.

I was crushed of course but it uh, led me back to the true source of da blues.

I used to have lots and lots and lots of vinyl. 33s. and 45s. And I copied those to cassette for the car. I've acquired most of that collection digitally, and I've been adding to it ever since. And it ALL fits in my pocket now. Much easier than cueing up on the turntable....

Mainly, classic rock and alternative rock, with a lot of classical.

Here is link to listen to Paul Whiteman Orchestra 1924 music.
His music is also at YouTube.
Paul Whiteman was first to record Gershwins "Rapspody in Blue".
I was enjoying Alabamy Bound when I started this thread.

I had a whole collection of original Beatles 45s, but they disappeared. I have a feeling my brother may have sold them years ago. I also had one original 'House of the Rising Sun' by The Animals. That's gone too.

Drake, Lil Wayne, E40, Kendrick Lamar, Asap Rocky, 50 Cent, Lil Jon...

But I also like modern and classic rock (pre and post 80s)

I personally think that the greatest musical talent to grace this planet is LedZepplin.

Various forms of hard rock/metal, some classic rock as well, and more relaxing stuff on the occasions my ears start to bleed. I hear all of it without much concern about it "driving the spirit away." If it drives the elders away I'll call it an added bonus. ;-)
