I added something to an article on Wikipedia and it was instantly removed by a group of TBMs. Seems like lots of the articles are controlled by the church.

Does anyone have experience dealing with this? I want to follow Wikipedia's rules but it's sometimes hard to figure out what those are. Can we work together to improve articles? What is the best strategy for dealing with people who have an agenda?

It may or may not have been TBMs. Controversial topics get a lot of scrutiny, and editors are often extra picky about the rules in an effort to avoid all out war.

Try taking a look at the talk page. If you're not sure how to get your edits in, post a comment to the talk page asking about the issue and ask for advice.

A lot of readers aren't even aware of the talk page.
