I've heard the LDS kids in the Phoenix area are preparing for the cultural celebration for the new Phoenix LDS Temple.

Since Phoenix wasn't settled by LDS pioneers (like Mesa or Gilbert) and it doesn't have much local history (due to it's young age) the kids don't have much to go on when planning their dance and song numbers.

Here are a couple of ideas I came up with:

--A dance number celebrating the thousands of old mid-westerners that 'snowbird' in the area during the winter. have the kids build small wooden buicks, oldsmobiles and motor homes and slowly push them around the stage to honor the snowbirds driving 15 mph through Sun City. They could have the mandatory left blinker going continusly on each cart to create a cool lighting affect. There could be singers dressed up in housecoats, shorts & black socks up to knees and one piece coveralls.

--The kids could do a song and dance celebrating AZ and it's intolernace toward illegal aliens. Have half the kids dress up like immigrants and the others like border patrol. Have the border patrol kids chase the immigrants around the stage and finally push them over a stage fence for a dramatic dance interpretation. Have a soloist dress as Sherrif Joe and sing a cute song with backup dancers wearing pink prison stripes.

Any other AZ folks with good ideas for the temple cultural celebration?

They could do live baptism for the dead for Wallace and ladmo. Then give each kid a Ladmo bag.

Perhaps Hub Cap and the Wheels could play some "spiritual" music. Gerald could also give a great speech!

Gerald could tear the bom in half.

Oh boy does that bring back dejaview.....

I watched their first shows on ch5 as a lad.

Bill Thompson and Latimer Kwaitkowski.

And I've always hated Gerald, right?

Methinks another perfect Phx timepiece worthy of re-enactment is good old Legend City. What memories.

The wild west street setting would be perfect for re-enactments of famous gun battles.

Think of it, Orrin Port and Josie Stout raiding helpless wagon trains dressed as a White Injuns.

Or maybe the Benson shootout in Cache county.

Best one would come last......that unforgettable Carthage gun battle.

Oh and let's not leave out Alice Cooper.

Have him do dramatizations of throat slashes and gut gashes.

He'd be perfect.

Don't forget Wallace and Ladmo had a restaurant in Mesa for bday parties. My child had one there. I also miss the hidden messages for adults that went over the heads of the kids. I miss that kind of tv.

Have Diane Ryan Fight Kent Dana on the lawn while Danny White and John Giles are inside being endowed for the dead on behalf of Mike Condello and Steve Allen. Since photos of the endowment are not allowed, Steve Benson will do courtroom sketch style drawings of each stage of the ritual.

Vehemence performs in the chapel with guest artist Alice Cooper (wearing a wig from Heddy's House of Wigs). Gary Hall Junior will sign autographs from the baptismal font in skimpy swimwear from Parr of Arizona and Jerry Foster flies in to give an anti-pot pep talk to the kids.

Captain Super heads up the security team, who will turn Frankie Muniz away at the gate.

Over the head adult double entendre that predated some of the cartoons W&L later showed, even.

Beany & Cecil, the iconic Rocky n Bullwinkle with Mr Knowitall et al come to mind.

Ya, Heddy's wigs on Camelback . . . which conjurs up yet another happy hippy Phx memeory.... Heddy's was next door to a small low power daytime radio station called KCAC.

Ya ever heard of William Edward Compton? [aka back then as Little Willy Sunshine] . . . He of the Terrace name and fame? Anyway Bill had co-founded that tiny station after being kicked off KRUX, a heads-up competitor to KRIZ which happened to be the flagship station of 'Gerald' aka Pat Mc Mahon.

Willy then went on to start KDKB and the rest is phx radio history.

Pretty cool sharing semtinental journeys with a Valley of the Stunned oldtimer from Sandland, USA.

I'm proud to say W&L, KDKB, Rocky&Bullwinkle, Monty Python and Mad Magazine made me the sarcastic smartass I am today.

Furniture shabby? Call Abby.

One more idea just came to me. Have the kids sing a musical number about the dangers of pornography while reenacting the story of the Bob Crane murder in Scottsdale.

Phoenix was much smaller back then and the murder of the b-list Hogan's Heros actor had huge coverage in the local media.

the dark side of camelot southwest, Hogan's nonhero.

never any resolution to that episode alas

which brings me to another deeper darker blast from the past

moonshiners and bootleggers were nothing unique to az

however lest we forget our very own home brewed bad boys....we must needs remember kemper marley and his heir- apparent . . .

old man hensley ....he of budwieser exclusive patrimony

who raised the alarm to don bolles [deceased az repub reporter who was on the case til it blew up in his face :( ]

who then of course became benefactor to his daughter cindy's newly beloved.....

the hon john mc cain

did i say honorable?

my bad

How about Aqua Netta the movie star wannabe and her car hawking husband hosting the late night movie on Saturday night? The ward baking bread and having bar b que's to raise money for the new chapel? Watching Willie Mays hit a home run in a San Francisco Giant spring training game. Before Legend City was even built having a salesman come to our house and try to sell my father shares in the next "disneyland". Swamp coolers, the Phoenix "grid plan" to avoid building freeways and look like LA....
Ahh, Phoenix in the good old days.

Then the was our very own Voice of Elohim in temple movies and silver tongued car salesman, the godfather of the Dana dynasty, Joe Dana.

And we all know his kid Kent from the nightly appearances as a talking head.

BTW, my big sis was roomies with Joe's daughter at the Why.

I grew up in Lizard Lick (Phoenix) and know about Wallace and Ladmo. When I was working my way through Arizona State University (go devils) I was in the carpenter's union.
I was working on building houses in a subdivision (upscale) and learned that one of the houses was for the Ladmo actor.
I was so impressed to be that close to fame and fortune. lol

As I recall, and if I am wrong someone correct me, the Phoenix was a mythical bird which rose from ashes. They should sing about the Phoenix and the associated Greek gods and goddesses which mormons seek to emulate in the CK.

Ya know Jerry, I gotta one-up ya.

I met one of his kids way back when.

When someone said it must be so cool having such a loveable dad, he shot us a look that said otherwise.

Beyond that I shan't speak ill of the dearly departed.

My childhood dream was to wear my Cub Scout shirt and appear on Wallace and Ladmo show; while graciously accepting my Ladmo Bag.

Unfortunately, that never happened. The closest I ever came was when I saw them 'live' at Roller World (near Big Surf) in Tempe. I was there for a Panda Party. (Those of you from the East Valley will know what I'm talking about!)

I remember W&L looked really old at the time. I think their careers were starting to slow down and they seemed tired and worn down. :-(

You could always invite Lynda Carter (Wonder Woman on tv) to save the day. She graduated from arcadia hs.

Oh I forgot this is a moron thing. Can't have a woman save the day.

I'm not a Phoenix resident and have only been there a few times, but I think any celebration of Mormon history there needs to be a "salute" Evan Mecham, the former TBM governor who was removed from office after a year or so.
