Not just a liberal, but a gay liberal. What kind of straight man spends all his time having dinner parties with his twelve closest guy friends, and is always embracing and kissing them? For that matter, what straight man has a dinner party with his twelve male friends and asks them to eat him?

. . . when I learned that my parents were conservatives and Republicans.

In social studies class in school, we learned about Democrats and Republicans, and I was absolutely sure that my parents must be Democrats, based on everything they'd taught me about Jesus loving everyone, helping poor and needy, and so on. All that Sunday School stuff was pure liberalism! I was completely dumbfounded when they told me they were Republicans.

It still doesn't make much sense to me now, and all of us kids grew up to be liberals. And I'm sure it's at least partly because of what they taught us when we were little.

Nevermo, but know exactly what you mean. Not only parents, but most siblings also. The conservative ones can't understand how we could all be "raised with the same values" and the whole family not be conservative, and when/where did we "turn liberal"?

I have the same question but in reverse. I thought I was raised liberal, and when did they turn conservative?

I'm a conservative and I don't personally see liberalism as helping the poor, or Christ as a liberal. He seemed about people helping people regardless of what the authorities do in government. Modern liberalism seems close to communism, which led to mass starvation under Stalin in Russia, and under Mao in China. It's a scam that politicians tell people, give us your money and we'll help the poor, but then most of the money goes to keep the politicians wealthy and in power. That's why since the Great Society of the 60s that was supposed to end poverty in America, there's still lots of poverty.

Nonsense. Social democracies are a far cry from communism which under Stalin was really a dictatorship. Those come from both the left and the right. I too was confused as to why my parents would be Republican. Didn't seem to jive with what I was taught in primary. Now most of the siblings.are moderates.

Can't say as I blame them, very boring book. But King Bennie was way too much of a bleeding heart to ever be on Mike Lee's Christmas card list.
