It's been awhile since I had my name removed from the records of the Church. Yesterday, I received a letter from our ex-Stake President. He was released about a year ago. He states in it, that even though he was released, he still wanted to continue to write to families on his list of people that he is concerned about.

It was a two page form letter giving all kinds of advice and direction regarding prayer and ending by sharing his family theme: "Never Doubt"

Part of me wanted to write him back and tell him to let it go, that he was no longer Stake President with any authority to provide unsolicited advice (no matter how well intended in his mind). To tell him that I was no longer a member and to take me off his personal list of people to be concerned about. And even to tell him what I really thought of his advice.

But frankly, it was just not worth the stamp.

Send him contrary advice about DOUBT. I posted this recently:

Quote from an apostle who was in the First Presidency of the Church:

"When we come into a new field of research that will challenge our due and honest consideration, we should be warned against coming too quickly to a conclusion, of forming a decision too hastily. We should be scientific -- that is, open-minded, approaching new problems without prejudice, deferring a decision until all the facts are in. Some say that the open-minded leave room for DOUBT. But I believe we should DOUBT some of the things we hear. DOUBT has a place if it can stir in one an interest to go out and find the truth for one's self."

---HUGH B. BROWN, "An Abundant Life, The Memoirs of Hugh B. Brown", A Final Testimony

FYI, Here's HBB's leadership facts:

October 4, 1953 – April 10, 1958 Assistant to the Quorum of Twelve
April 10, 1958 – December 2, 1975 – Apostle
June 22, 1961 – October 12, 1961 – Third Counselor in First Presidency
October 12, 1961 – October 4, 1963 – Second Counselor in First Presidency
October 4, 1963 – January 18, 1970 – First Counselor in First Presidency

To receive inspiration for those outside your sphere of responsibility is against church regulations.

He never had any authority anyway...just the power that you and others chose to give him.

Dear Stake Pres:

RE: Your premise to "never doubt?"

According to LDS doctrine there were two plans offered in the pre-existence:

Plan one: Offered by Jesus Christ allowed all men to use their free agency to make choices, to weigh evidence, to investigate and yes the freedom to doubt.

Plan two: Offered by Lucifer took away our free agency to make choices, or to weigh evidence, or to investigate, and yes IT TOOK AWAY THE FREE AGENCY TO DOUBT.

Nicely played.

But follow it up with, "Given that you are clearly following Satan's plan, and encouraging others to do so as well, I can only conclude that you are in league with Satan. Either you are knowingly doing his work, or you have been so deluded by him, that you believe his whispers to be the promptings of the Spirit. Either way, you are a dangerous influence, and I must ask you to never contact us again."

I have three things to say about this kind of thing: BOUNDARIES BOUNDARIES BOUNDARIES.

Learn some!

One of the things we deal with are interfering sales people of some sort on the phone, at the door, and in the mail.
JUNK MAIL goes in the trash!!

I also got rid of that kind of thing by putting all of their junk mail back into their self addressed envelope and mailing it back to them! Gets me off their list in a hurry!

I agree with your Stake President. Never doubt...that you made the right choice leaving Mormonism once and for all.

Ask him why the "Forever Family" includes callings in this world that keep families apart much of the time.

Stake president in a follow up conversaion..."Did you get my letter?"

YOU: "Yes, I did, and I tore right through it!"

YOU: "Yes, I did, and I gave it the attention it deserved and filed it." (round file)

What are you a great former source of income for the TSCC through tithing? The SP interested in you?
No, I've been through that, I've moved on.

No need to put yourself out for this guy.

I'd be tempted to respond, "Ho-hum, give it up, buddy. Please."
