Why do so many believers REALLY get into the whole "grovel" thing

when it comes to god? In prayers its like they try to one up each other on how many grovel words they can cram into a single prayer. Adjectives like Most Holy, kind, forgiving, generous, loving, omnipotent, it goes on and on. Even as a kid I found it annoying but couldn't quite describe why. Is it a rameumptum kind of thing where they are really just trying to convince others of their own holiness, spirituality?

Or do they really believe in a god that just gets off on having others worship him. never understood it. Creepy as hell.

I vote for the rameumptom idea - I think it is just attempts to sound more spiritual than anyone else.
