For me, it was a matter of clicking off and deleting automatic thinking scripts.
I have a long post on that subject that I will post.

My dad is big on "sacred covenants," which he talks about in a weird, ghostly voice." I had to ignore certain things despite his protests, and then wait for him to get over it.

Of course not. I could disprove it in matter of minutes, using the Book of Mormon as proof that it is a fraud.

I very much liked this doctrine and the church I believed in was in denial.

53 years of teaching it in the endowment and it became a non-doctrine?

I knew about BY teaching it, but I didn't know about the 53 years in the endowment.

That's insane. Now you will be ex'd if you teach it! I'm sure they never explained to anyone why there was a sudden change. They just didn't do it anymore, and you'd best not ask why.

Death penalties. Racism. Misogyny. Lies. A family history that used to be proud of its polygamous heritage. (It's not talked about much anymore at family reunions.)

I think the biggest thing was overcoming the pioneer heritage of my family. I was the first one in my family to leave. There were jack Mormons among us, to be sure. But I was the first one to openly reject everything. Being a pioneer is equally exhilarating and terrifying. My job is provide support for those in the family who are leaving. I think they might have an easier time than I did, because they aren't the first.
