Has this been discussed here?

http://meetthemormons.com/post/95200464684/meet-the-mormons-in-theaters-october-10th

Apparently the proceeds go to the Red Cross.

I'm cynically skeptical - looks like another PR stunt that's actually a further financial burden on members.

PS. 10/10 is National Coming Out Day (for LGBTQs). Maybe SLC is celebrating & encouraging gay Mormons to finally come out of the closet.

Is this for real?

I can't possibly imagine that anybody except Mormons would ever, EVER want to watch this.

Talk about preaching to the choir.

Bednar was on Utah channel 2 last night discussing how it will clear up misconceptions and give people a chance to know who Mormons really are yada yada. I don't think the Red Cross should get its hopes up for a big cash windfall.

It appears like it will go hand in hand with the "flood social media" program Bednar is pushing.

What a great idea, get all the members to pay to go and see what a real Mormon family looks like.

"We're normal and awesome! See, we even made a movie to show just how normal and nice we are! Totes not a cult at all."

Papa Ken, I'm very angry at you for posting that link. Now I have my church clothes on and I'm ready to go back to church -- but I have to wait 5 whole days! I think it was the uplifting and inspirational music that got me.

If that music keeps rolling around in your head, there is a nifty little Mormon trick I know about:

If you have nasty thoughts about having sex, sing a hymn. In your case, just reverse it.

it will open up discussion and everyone will be talking about it. If there is a movie, he said people will think Mormons are important.

Or something like that. I was SHOCKED at his delusional statements. I have a hard time understanding that they believe their own bullshit.

Giving the proceeds to the Red Cross does't seem like it will hurt TSCC becuase there won't be any proceeds. this is a fail if I have ever heard one.

I'm not so sure that this will be a dud. Surely this qualifies for a Razzie?

I do wonder, though, how they will handle the masses that will flock to the Mormon chapels after seeing this in the hope of meeting hip, interesting people and dropping in on a regular sac meeting. Or an F&T-meeting, for that matter?

That's what is comforting to me. Any sucker that might be reeled in by this movie will turn right around and head out the door when they get the REAL Mormon experience.

Well, that was about imformative as temple prep class.

Rated PG? Mormons gone wild, eh...

How transparent. Where have we seen this before? Oh yeah, the super successful "I'm a Mormon" campaign. Seems convenient they dig up the Mormons that represent less than 1% of the membership for their advertising. An interracial couple? A black family? Some dude shaking hands with Obama??? LIES LIES LIES

Is a more fitting title.

Profiles include:
A Nepalese humanitarian worker
The Polynesian football coach of the U.S. Naval Academy
A black Mormon Bishop
A female Costa Rican kick-boxer
A single white mother
An old white dude

Not exactly a typical cross-section of the Mormon demographic. If it were so, 66% of LDS, inc. would be super achieving, non-white people, with extraordinary career paths.

What should be in the movie:
Bishop asking teen about masturbation
Cleaning crew duty
A temple sealing, full dress
Eating food storage
Missionaries tracting
Home teaching visit
Church's stalkers calling a relative to get an address.

No, no, it is the sock drawer that needs to be organized!

Mormon Cinema as a cultural phenomenon ("Saints and Soldiers","States of Grace") was marginally successful, in that it inserted Mormonism into contexts that were able to reach a much broader audience. I know a few non-Mo's (military history buffs, mostly) that watched Saints and Soldiers, and most of them liked it.

Mormon cinema as an ecclesiastical matter, on the other hand, has been a dismal failure. In that category I'd put "The Book of Mormon Movie","The Work and the Glory", "Day of Defense", and the latest attempt, "Meet the Mormons."

I'm not sure who's going to carry this, either. SCERA might. Water Gardens might, but their focus is families -- which, perversely, this wouldn't work with, as it'll bore kids.

But is there a story, a script or is it just extended segments about these members' lives? Can't wait to see the critics reviews....if they manage to find a cinema outside of Utah that wants to show this propaganda.

I don't think it's a coincidence that it has the same name as that recent show about the missionaries in the UK.

Seriously. Who outside of the moridor would watch that? Another waste of a lot of money. I don't mind a faith promoting video or movie, but one just to showcase a particular religion is silly.

Surely this will spawn other blockbuster movies:

Meet the Scientologists

Meet the Jehovah's Witnesses

Meet the Seventh Day Adventists

Who would pay to see this crap?

Sometimes I wonder how mormon leadership can suffer from a persecution complex and admiration complex at the same time.

I find Scientology fascinating. I read that Going Clear book. I would love to see a documentary about Scientology. What I would not want to see however, is a movie about Scientology produced, written, directed by, and starring Tom Cruise. When you make a movie about your own organization, that's not a documentary. It's called propaganda. No thank you.

Here are couple of lines they need in the movie:

1. "That's how they laugh the day away in the Merry old land of Oz."

2. Well there it is, Elder Nobody, Temple Square. Are you happy? I'd say I'm the happiest boy in the whole wide world, Uncle Mental Case/ Elder Bednar.

I'm the mental case? You're the one in the straight jacket.

I imagine when they put you in yours, you'll need a much larger one, sir.

That's cute. Bednar says

I'm sure there are many, many more movie quotes that are applicable here:

As goldenrule lists re scenes in this movie atrocity:

"An interracial couple? A black family? Some dude shaking hands with Obama??? LIES LIES LIES"

And as mrtranquility has renamed it..."Meet the Fringe Mormons"

His list:

A Nepalese humanitarian worker
The Polynesian football coach of the U.S. Naval Academy
A black Mormon Bishop
A female Costa Rican kick-boxer
A single white mother
An old white dude

I recon we must rename this thing... This filmed attempt to align the cult with modern excretions of New Age Sewage...

Call it "The Modern Mormon Menagerie"

Our Anglo founders must now be spinning in their graves.
