In my Humanities class, we've been talking about philosophers lately, primarily the Greek philosopher Socrates. He believed that one should always be questioning and searching for truth; "The unexamined life is not worth living."

This got me thinking as I looked around at all my TBM classmates, Did they really understand what Socrates meant? In Mormonism, you are discouraged from questioning and looking at things from all angles. You are told that you don't need to think for yourself, because the leaders have already thought for you.
Socrates would be ashamed of this thing we once called our religion.

Plato famously described a cave in which everyone who lived in the cave had a skewed perception of reality. The Mormon church took that idea and perfected it. They put all of their members into a cave, they start a fire and then tell everyone in the cave the fire is the sun.

We just talked about that yesterday. The whole thing screamed Mormonism, but no one else seemed to notice.

Learning to read and think critically is such an important skill. I fear that it isn't taught as much as it should be.

I think the two most important things you can teach someone (a child, really, but it's never too late) are critical thinking and empathy. To not be an idiot, and to not be a dick, respectively.

Learning about Socrates in my philosophy class was what led me out of the church.
