He left work at lunch, met his Bishop, and they gave some guy a blessing at the hospital.

Oh, the guy unexpectedly died of a heart attack before the end of the day.

It's been over a year. Is it okay to tease my Mormon friend now?

My personal opinion, leave it alone.

You're probably right. But if he offers me a blessing for anything, would it be disrespectful to say "no thank you"?

Oh yes, a simple: "no thank you" is fine, in my view.
I might say: I can't stop you from saying a silent prayer and smile!

I don't get it. Why would you want to tease him about it? It sounds like you are just wanting to be a dick.

That goes in the "no" column. :)

I'd like to see his reaction when I point out his power to bless has a fatal flaw - it doesn't work.

It wouldn't bother me if you mentioned the event when he suggests how wonderful blessings are.

I think if he's determined to dish it out, he might need to learn to take it.

Having a person die after giving them a Priesthood Blessing sometimes causes all kinds of personal turmoil. Please place my answer in the 'no' column.

Most likely the dude died because the olive oil was rancid and god rejected the blessing. They should have used coconut oil because it has better healing mojo than olive oil.

I guess its time to add another fact.

After this member died, my friend pointed out that he was a member but not very involved in the church - said they mostly did it for the guy's wife.

Who says it failed? Mormons, et al, usually have the "Thou will be done" caveat. So, if the guy/gal doesn't recover, then it was a blessing of comfort, release from this life, or whatever. This way they always think they have a part in the the way god does things... as opposed to "stuff happens."

In many blessings words are inserted to the effect that the person recieving the blessing will receive whatever God has in store for them, for instance , death later that day.

That way no matter what happens all bases are covered.

Making fun of Mormonism is a lifetime project of 24/7 dedication, and even then you will only scratch the surface.

So do as you wish, but like any good chess player make sure you know your opposition's next move before you make your own.

I agree, which is why over a number of years I simply nod when he makes church comments. But some day he's bound to catch me at the wrong time.
