Recently at church, I was reminded of the inadequate public education I received. You were all probably aware of this, but it was the building of the Frankfurt temple that led to the fall of the Berlin wall. In school, I had learned that there were multiple social, political, and economic considerations that led to the fall. And like a fool, I believed that nonsense.

At church, it became so clear. In 1987, the Frankfurt temple was built, and then BAM! Just two short years later, the Berlin wall toppled over. This link is so obvious, I can't believe it didn't occur to me earlier. I wish they would teach real history in school instead of the make believe history I learned. Looks like church is the only place I can go to learn the facts.

On an unrelated topic, does anyone else feel like their IQ drops precipitously while sitting in church?

Yep, TSCC in GC played up how nice the government of East Germany was. Oops, after the fall of communism, that leader was brought up on charges.

I don't want to turn into the Ms. Manners of this forum rhgc, but I do feel obliged to tell you that in polite company, it's not nice to bring up any minor faux pas that church leaders may have made. Everyone makes mistakes such as not recognizing a leader of a country as a diabolical tyrant or accidentally marrying a fourteen year old. Let's not hold it against them. Remember, it's the church that's perfect and not the people.

Maybe not yet, but when it does happen, you'll know why.

Silly, the temple has to be IN North Korea for it to fall.

I like the argument that all the great scientific/technological
advances were made since Joseph Smith's time. And, therefore,
it was the restoration of the Gospel that spurred the
industrial/scientific/technological revolution.

Mormons get credit for EVERYTHING that could possibly be good.

Yes! Didn't a Mormon invent the internet?

Actually, I think it was the Freiburg temple, not Frankfurt.

Frankfurt was located in the former West Germany.

Although the Freiberg temple was dedicated just a couple years before the Frankfurt temple, in church they spoke specifically about the Frankfurt temple. I was surprised too, but they were obviously smarter than me, so I wasn't going to say anything.

Not that anyone cares, but as a side note I had the chance to go through both temples in Germany a few years back. I really like the country, and if I ever make it back,I won't be wasting my time in the temple again.

The Berlin Wall was weakened by the Loma Prieta earthquake, and an aftershock brought it down. Everyone knows that.

i would suggest Pope John Paul II had more to do with the wall coming down than any mormon.

With that being stated, I think we have most promising pope of our time holding the office presently.

I have much hope for Francis, and hope he will be the great humanitarian we know is possible.

I say this as a devoted atheist/Hitchenite.

Also, on a side note.

I went through the Berlin Wall at Checkpoint Charlie in 1984.

The western sectors of the wall were completely covered in graffiti. The eastern side of the wall was completely white, with guard towers with armed soldiers, guard dogs on wires, and other assorted nasties in place to keep people from even getting close to the wall.

Everything in the eastern side was drab grey. It was like paint was banned from the place.

However, there was a high building in the western sector that was visible from all over Berlin. The entire side of the building was painted in a giant, bright solidarity flag. It was really the only thing of color, highly visible from the eastern side.

I will never forget that, and think of it a lot as now I am a proud member of a trade union.

I would submit that painted flag had far more to do with the wall coming down than anything mormon.
