The contradiction about Mormonism is that they claim to be in favor of freedom, freedom to worship. This is so that their crazy assed cult can exist.
Been thinking about this topic lately in that a lot of Mormons (not only Mitt) are running for office, under the banner of extending religious freedoms in this country.
If we suddenly had religious restrictions such as under Communism, Mormonism, along with other religions, would be outlawed. Hence, many Mormon "Profits" in the past so vehemently opposed Communism and Socialism. Government regulations of religion would kill them as an org.
However, the principle of having the right to freedom of religion seems flawed. Freedom for any so-called religion, just because they meet in a building and call themselves a religion- should they be allowed to be considered a religion? Even something as contrived as Mormonism (think: the Joseph Smith story)?
The answer to regulating such groups is to have all religions comply with certain standards. No "for profit" arms allowed, period. Limits on the personal freedoms and financial requirements to join and participate would also go a long ways to averting them being so cultish. And having a requirement of full and open financial disclosure so that anyone cansee and investigate, would make sense.
