Sorry for the OT post, but I thought posting on this board would probably be the easiest way to get an answer to my question, as this is the only board I use with so many posters in Utah and the surrounding areas. I'm tentatively planning a trip to Las Vegas from Orem this weekend and have no vehicle but my motorcycle. It's been a very mild winter here, but I know elevation climbs for quite a few miles between here and Vegas and I wonder if there are places where I can expect to find the roads covered in snow or ice. Cold weather is no serious object, as I can always dress for it; slick roads are the enemy. Thanks.

There are no steep hills or climbs to worry about at all. The elevation climb is gradual with it peaking at Cedar City. From there you drop elevation going south to Vegas. You do need to be mindful of the weather of course. Especially if it is bad weather or snowing at the Black Ridge about 20 miles south of Cedar City. Spend the night before pushing through that during inclement weather.

Should be a great weekend to come down. I live in St. George, and riding through the Gorge between here and Mesquite is loads of fun.

Or are you wanting to take something like US89?

You are going to freeze your a## off. Even in summer above 5000'
you get a cool chill and need a jacket.
Drop that to 35-40* @ 60 mph you will freeze.

The bad conditions include squalls, microbursts, blowing snow, icy roads and hand-freezing cold temps.

If it were me, I would seriously consider going another time.

If you do chance it, I would certainly recommend engine-connected electrical hand-warmers, leather chaps, a chin-high neck wrap, thick boots and heavy gloves (but the latter not too thick or cumbersome so as to make it difficult for you to get a feel for the grips).

In other words, dress like you're going snowmobiling.
