Sound familiar?

This was a statement from a female character in the movie, "Nightmare Alley."

The movie, from 1947, traces the 'evolution' of a carnival trickster into a "spiritualist" religious scammer, played by the handsome and charismatic Tyrone Power. His schemes and deceptions get the support of grieving and vulnerable people...with money, of course. He is offered tabernacles and radio stations.

Because it's Hollywood, this "prophet, seer and revelator" is finally discovered and discredited.

In these "religiously correct" times, I wonder if either could get made without massive outcries of "bigotry" and "hate"?

Also good is the Steve Martin movie 'Leap of Faith' where he plays a con man evangelist; in one scene Lucas Hass' miraculously cured character asks him, after Martin reveals that he's a fake, "What difference does it make, as long as it gets the job done?" and Martin replies "It makes all the difference in the world, kid."
