I only have anectodal evidence... So take this with a grain of salt. Guy I was chatting with online came up to visit me when I was single, he said when he was an RA in the dorms at BYU he hung up an announcement of a life commitment ceremony that stated the couple met when they were companions on their mission.
Next to it he hung the part in the mish handbook that says missionaries must always sleep in the same room but never the same bed. Cause, you know, that's funny... Or something. Ugh.
I know of at least two cases on my mission. I think far more came out after the mission, and likely struggled during. I couldn't imagine as a heterosexual male being required to maintain 24 hour contract with a 19 year old female for 2 years and not have sexual relationships. Especially given the pressure to have and share intimate spiritual experiences, those emotions would definitely cross over into sexual attraction.
Of course, later on, the fact that he messed around with a few of his companions came out some 25 or so years later. It would be interesting to ask him again.
This definitely happens. I dated a guy (I'm a guy) who gave hand jobs to his companion on his mission. His companion felt guilty and confessed. Both were sent home.
Although 90 percent of my companions were a real turn off.
I told one I was gay and he automatically assumed I was in love with him. But honestly he was very gross, maturity wise.
My trainer though, was H O T. He did push ups every night, in just his garment bottoms, before bed and he asked me if I could watch and keep count for him, of course I obliged!

Dude couldn't count his own push-ups? Hmmm.... Methinks he wanted the attention.
Early 80's Montreal. My trainer who was DL had weekly "splits" with the zone leader. They never left the apartment all day long. It drew some surprised looks when they would meet up on Sundays for meetings and give each other a big lip smouch. They were both pretty arrogant.
I don't doubt you, but I never heard about any of that. I'd have thought the gossip mill would have gone into overdrive. Can't imagine who they were, but I'd remember the names if I heard them. Damn, this'll bug me now.
Oh it sure happened. It was in the zone that encompassed Pointe Claire Ward. Trying not to give away too much, but one's last name ryhmes with "Ripp". Althugh I never spoke to him after we transferred apart, I hear he stayed in Utah after the mish and had at least one kid. The other one starts with "W" , eventually made AP, and was supposed to be some kind of Hollywood royalty. I think they both went to Ottawa (not sure if as a companionship) for several months.
I believe you. I've been ripping up my long-term memory neurons, and I think I just might remember them. I was in Dorval (Kirkland Ward) and then NDG/Westmount between January and October 1981. These guys might have been in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, which I think served the Pointe Claire ward.
The "W" guy must have been made AP after I went home in June 1982.
First time in over 30 years I regret throwing away those f***ing CMM Messenger newsletters.
All that kotatsu talk is making this Japanese RM jealous. I was way too good for way too long. I can think of a couple of wasted opportunities in retrospect. Dang.

In fact... I'm taking a workshop on making documentary films and my plan so far is to make a 5 or 6-minute short on this very topic. I just need more (local) people to agree to talk about it.
My smoking hot brother hooked up with a set of Elders who lived across the hall from us. I came home from class to find booze on the table, two missionary uniforms complete with garments on the floor, and TWO ties on his bedroom doorknob. They must have had a great time because they spent many, many hours in his room after that!
