While Genesis 38 is commonly used as an anti-masturbation section, it has nothing to do with masturbation. It's closer to anti "fucking your dead brother's wife, then pulling out" then being about masturbation.

No one ever talked to me about when I was a kid (nevermo), or about anything else involving sex, but I kind of absorbed the idea that any kind of sexual behavior was "bad" from my general environment. My mother is a major germophobe and part of it was just the idea that one shouldn't touch germy areas of the body. It wasn't just down there, either, but the mouth, too -- in my family, no one ever took a drink from someone else's glass, or a bite of food from someone's plate. It was "dirty." My family considers feet dirty, too. It had a lot more to do with germs than sex in my family.

Anyway, when I got old enough to masturbate, I had a lot of shame about it. I can't imagine how much worse it would have been if I'd had religious leaders quizzing me about it and preaching about it all the damned time. It's just crazy.

It seems to me like masturbation is probably a better choice than casual sex for any number of reasons. One, it's cleaner, if you're a germophobe or just extra careful about communicable disease. And second, it doesn't exploit anyone else or take the risk of having unexpected social or emotional consequences. I've reached an age where I'm just no longer interested in dating or relationships, and taking care of those urges for myself is just so much less of a hassle! No worries about finding the right person, or about my looks, or about having someone hanging around all the time, etc. I get wound up, take a couple of minutes to deal with it, and then I feel better and life goes on.
