I love how they keep finding that alcohol in moderation has a variety of health benefits.

Another slap in the face to the so called word of wisdom.

MY TBM DH's doctor recommended that DH have a glass of red wine with supper each night (not sure whether for blood pressure, diabetes, general up-tightness, or what), and and after great struggle with conscience, DH asked one of our daughters (who is much more into red wines than I am - I prefer white) for a recommendation.

She recommended a chianti, and he tried just a 2 oz shot glass of it, made an "EW!!!" kind of face complete with wrinkled nose, and said "There. I've done it."

A couple of nights later, he had another shot glass of wine with supper. He still doesn't care for it, but his attitude is that if the doctor orders it, it's probably OK.

I don't imagine he is likely to have a bishop asking about the WoW anytime soon - he has been inactive for years - but it was kind of cute, seeing the reaction of a sixtysomething man who has never tasted alcohol in his life, try it for the first time.

Purely medicinal, mind you. . .

I can sympathize, red wine is really difficult for a newbie to get in to (at least, it was for me!). The best red I've tried so far is Estancia Meritage, but I'm sure there are others out there that aren't very "dry" and would be more palatable to a newbie.

Another possibility may be Sangria. It has sweet fruit juice added which can make it a lot more enjoyable. Or heck, make your own -- pour some grape juice (or Sprite, for that matter) in whatever red is handy!

Benjamin Franklin is sometimes mis-quoted as saying that beer or wine is "a gift from God and shows that He loves us."

That God seems a lot more believable than the Mormon God.

People need to be reasonable about this issue.

Alcohol can cause lots of problems, too. So, we ought to be careful before promoting alcohol use.

If you choose to drink, please do so in moderation. And, remember -- it is o.k. not to drink.

The first alcohol beverages date to about 7000 Bc in China. The early drinks contained fermented grapes, honey mead and rice beer.

So have a cold Tsingtao and enjoy history.

Though the Germans did not invent beer, they did perfect it.

I thank the Mesopotamian goddesses Ninkasi for creating beer, Siris for being the living embodiment of booze, and Siduri for making us enjoy it so damned much.

Guy at work recently said his wife has banned him from drinking after he got drunk and pissed in her dresser drawer. He doesn't remember it.

And his little sister just wrapped her car around a power pole while drunk - lucky to live.

Of course, you are told to drink responsibly, but once you start drinking, you lose your inhibitions and judgment.

only if you're a complete moron who can't self regulate. Part of drinking responsibly is knowing your limit. It's not too hard to figure out. If you can't then you've got problems that extend well beyond alcohol.

Seriously? Do some research on how many people in the world drink. Then do some research on how many people get hurt get hurt from obesity. Yes there are people that get hurt from alcohol, but there are also many that get hurt from many other things. Words of Wisdom? I think not!

Ok I'll adjust it.

Thank God for alcohol drunk in wisdom.

I find it a good way to relax the brain after a busy day. I perform better in stressful periods if I have a drink at the end of each day.

Numerous studies have shown that moderate drinking reduces chance of death from all causes, compared to abstaining or heavy drinking. While there are unfortunately some tragic accidents, they are not of a significant number in relation to the number of people drinking to recommend complete abstinence.

Lets no forget about the benefits of pot. I recommend vaporizing and not smoking. Many more benefits compared to drinking. Not bad to have a little of each.

What do orange juice, coffee and Mayor Rob Ford have in common?

They used to say "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than have to have a frontal lobotomy".
