Because its expected. because you are afraid of having less chances in morgciety. (esp. on the girls who all looking for a RM to marry) however you turn it - it comes down to these 2 reasons.

Because when you leave for your mission all you've been told is what a wonderful experience it is and how it will be "the best 2 years of your life". No one ever gives the gory details.

Plus, all you've ever been told is that you WILL serve a mission.
