Anyone ever think this was bs? As a teenager, I found myself ineligible because of masturbation. From there, I figured well I might as well drink and sleep around. I mean, I'm still in the same boat right?

I dunno, it just seems to be kind of a stupid system. Wouldn't you agree?

When you know you can never be good enough, it kills your spirit.

Mormons are really good at this with the teenagers. Really, why try? If you don't pay your tithing out of your babysitting money you're not good enough. Never mind that $50 went to buy any school clothes you would have.

I'd had sex at 15, and did not tell a soul, let alone the so-called "leaders" in the cult. It was just a very stupid mistake, and none of their damn business. I was punishing myself inside already, and I didn't need their bs.

Yes and no.

There is value in having a set standard to meet. You don't normally get a degree or diploma without completing all requirements of your academic programme in school.

That said, it can be immensely helpful - particularly for the easily discouraged - to recognise and appreciate all efforts made, even if they don't quite meet a particular mark that they are hoping to reach. That can provide the encouragement needed for those who aren't quite there yet to eventually reach the mark.

Otherwise, it can seem easy to lose sight of the benefits - such as spiritual benefits, from a faith-based viewpoint, or health benefits - and feel like your efforts are wasted or worthless and not worth continuing or keeping up with.

setting a standard that you can never be good enough drives a lot of people out.

A woman in my ward gave a talk on this topic. Imagine that your goal is to brush your teeth twice every day. You follow it for a week, then one day you're tired and forget to brush at night.

Do you say to yourself, "well that was a huge fail, guess I was never intended to have teeth," and start placing orders for false teeth?

Or do you say to yourself, "whoops, I forgot a day. Got to make sure I brush twice tomorrow."
