I totally believe this is a real thing. Having left the Catholic faith for the Morg...and then leaving it, it kind of (really) messes with you.

I think Mormonism literally drove my mother crazy.

I used to work as an aide at a state mental hospital. We had
religiously nutty teenagers who could not function and would
lose themselves in prayer and scriptures. We couldn't stop
them, really, because of issues of "freedom of religion." Had
it been an obsession with anything non-religious we could have
had more control over it.

Religious fanaticism drove my father to become increasingly abusive as he tried to imitate the old testament god. Corporal punishment was his favorite, although he also enjoyed delivering long and incoherent lectures based on his feeble understanding of the garbage that is Mormon doctrine. A narcissist, he was emboldened with his priesthood authority, and he was quick to condemn and judge. My mother was invertebrate and caved into his demands. He stopped hitting her and turned his anger on his boys. I was the oldest boy, so I got the brunt of it, but it got even worse when I was identified as Satan's agent. Trauma? Honey you just don't know.
