Reading yesterday's thread about the Sons of Helaman group got me thinking. What kind of PR nightmare would TSCC have if a national media outlet did a news story about the group and TSCC's general preoccupation with masturbation? I would love to hear a 60 Minutes anchor say: "Some of the money that church members donate to help the needy pays to support boys who are going through the masturbation cessation program." Then TSCC would become a total joke in the eyes of any non-mo who hears about it.

How do we bring media attention to this? Any ideas?

There is a support group for masturbation? Wow, that is so sad. If you had a problem doing it like 5 times a day and it was interfering with day to day tasks then sure join a group, but pleasuring yourself a few times a week or even daily is not a bad thing, science suggests it is healthy....

I agree, it would be great if media attention was brought to this. I think in the end the group would really have to take off in order for it to really garner any news worthy attention. If there is an influx of youth in the group it might raise some ethical questions. Who knows?

I think this is an important point.

How many of these men have the "stamina" necessary for this activity to actually interfere with normal daily tasks?

Unless some other factor (drugs, bizarre medical conditions) is at play, my guess is that the population is near zero. And if some other factor exists, perhaps there should be a support group for that.

The "SoH" sounds like the usual scam: convince someone that they have a problem that really doesn't exist (sin, body thetans, susceptibility to electromagnetic fields, etc.) and then charge them for the "cure". There's so much money to be made from soaking the gullible -- if you have no conscience.

Oh I totally agree haha, the population who actually has a legitimate problem with masturbation probably 0.0001%

I'm not sure if I'd want that to happen. My whole family are mormons. I don't want them to become a laughing stock, and for their friends to mock them because they belong to a church that donates to such a stupid cause. We don't need to humiliate innocent people imo. We should be helping them to escape the church, not making their lives even harder.

The individual person who started this "Sons of Helaman" group, and other people involved should be given a hard time for it. Not the entire mormon population.

You do have a legitimate point, but we also have to be wary about the fact that the entire church has a part in perpetrating the questioning of youth about their genitals. It may be done in innocence, but I as well as many others can testify to the fact that the questioning by mormon leadership about masturbation to youth can be emotionally traumatizing, and have long lasting effects, consisting of shame and guilt that should have been avoided all together.

Innocent?
What is your definition?
Something like soldiers just following orders?

And if your TBMs can avoid facial flushing from the "rock in a hat" foundation of TSCC, probably handle any other outing to the public just fine.

To quote Henri Frederic Amiel:
The truth is not only violated by falsehood; it may be equally outraged by silence."

Foolish people should be made fools of. the powers that be support the whole mastrubation is a sin, the tithing of fools support the powers that be. Showing stupidity for what it is and not the word of god is a good thing.

In a few years the church will say the prohibition on masturbation was never doctrine anyway.

TSCC is trying to distance itself from Sylvester Graham's anti-wanking, WoW philosophy? Another of Jose Smith's ripoff jobs.

I am going to beat off right now in honor of the Sons of Heleman.

Our pro-jackoff support group needs a BoM name.

Gaddianton 'Gun" Slingers?

Lehi Limberwrists?

Teancum Tossers?

Sariah Salami Slappers?

Jackers for Jacob

Iron Rod Clingers?

Well, there should be plenty of plausible deniability to wiggle away from their absurd obsession when it becomes a total pr catastrophe.

Funny how Horny Joe never mentioned the choking of one's chicken.

Where does the Savior ever speak against it?

Even Briggy who railed against every sin on the christian calendar seems to have overlooked an obvious one.

So yeah, not hard to believe that some day soon we'll be hearing an enlightened profit say "I don't know that we ever taught that".

It's in "The Miracle Of Forgiveness" which means Mormons would have to throw their favorite book of manipulation and child abuse, under the bus. That alone might make attacking their masturbation obsession worth it.

I think I see you quite active on Twitter AltaRica. Have you tried tweets, preferably with a sourced link, and include message friendly media players. A few ideas--I'll add a few more, but I'm sure you can think of some good people to include.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone--the South Park guys
Lawrence O'Donnell (MSNBC, played Bill's lawyer on Big Love)
Rachel Maddow--MSNBC
Abby Huntsman
Lisa Goldstein (Not sure of name, but the NYTimes reporter that did the Mattson story)
Seth McFarlane--Family Guy creator, talent

They could either retweet to their larger audience or incorporate your source into their work.

There is someone that uses AltaRica that frequently tweets about Mormonism. Odd coincidence. My mistake.

Twitter is a good way to get your message out though. Might want to look into it.

SONS of Helaman?!!

More of this darn misogyny.

For gosh sake, Satan's very first whispering was to a "girl."

So give me Kids of Helaman.
Or at least a Daughters of Helaman.

Well, you know if they let girls into their group, and the girls start talking about their masturbation problems, the boys might really develop a masturbation problem.

STEPS IN OVERCOMING MASTURBATION

Be assured that you can be cured of your difficulty. Many have been, both male and female, and you can be also if you determine that it must be so.

This determination is the first step. That is where we begin. You must decide that you will end this practice, and when you make that decision, the problem will be greatly reduced at once.

But it must be more than a hope or a wish, more than knowing that it is good for you. It must be actually a DECISION. If you truly make up your mind that you will be cured, then you will have the strength to resist any tendencies which you may have and any temptations which may come to you. After you have made this decision, then observe the following specific guidelines:

1. Never touch the intimate parts of your body expect during normal toilet processes.

2. Avoid being alone as much as possible. Find good company and stay in this good company.

3. If you are associated with other persons having this same problem, YOU MUST BREAK OFF THEIR FRIENDSHIP. Never associate with other people having the same weakness. Don't suppose that two of you will quit together, you never will. You must get away from people of that kind. Just to be in their presence will keep your problem foremost in your mind. The problem must be taken OUT OF YOUR MIND for that is where it really exists. Your mind must be on other and more wholesome things.

4. When you bathe, do not admire yourself in a mirror. Never stay in the bath more than five or six minutes--just long enough to bathe and dry and dress AND THEN GET OUT OF THE BATHROOM into a room where you will have some member of your family present.

5. When in bed, if that is where you have your problem for the most part, dress yourself for the night so securely that you cannot easily touch your vital parts, and so that it would be difficult and time consuming for you to remove those clothes. By the time you started to remove protective clothing, you would have sufficiently controlled your thinking that the temptation would leave you.

6. If the temptation seems overpowering while you are in bed, GET OUT OF BED AND GO INTO THE KITCHEN AND FIX YOURSELF A SNACK, even if it is in the middle of the night, and even if you are not hungry, and despite your fears of gaining weight. The purpose behind this suggestion is that you GET YOUR MIND ON SOMETHING ELSE. You change the subject of your thoughts, so to speak.

7. Never read pornographic material. Never read about your problem. Keep it out of your mind. Remember--"first a thought, then an act." The thought pattern must be changed. You must not allow this problem to remain in your mind. When you accomplish that, you soon will be free of the act.

8. Put wholesome thoughts into your mind at all times. Read good books--Church books-scriptures--sermons of the brethren. Make a daily habit of reading at least one chapter of scripture, preferable from one of the four gospels in the New Testament, or the Book of Mormon. The four gospels--Matthew, Mark, Luke and John--above anything else in the Bible can be helpful because of their uplifting qualities.

9. Pray. But when you pray, don't pray about this problem, for that will tend to keep it in your mind more than ever. Pray for faith, pray for understanding of the scriptures, pray for the missionaries, the General Authorities, your friends, your families, BUT KEEP THE PROBLEM OUT OF YOUR MIND BY NOT MENTIONING IT EVER--NOT IN CONVERSATION WITH OTHERS, NOT IN YOUR PRAYERS. KEEP IT OUT of your mind!

Let me guess, money changes hands. Create the problem and offer a solution that has to be paid for. The founder of this support group is simply following the example of JS and every church leader since then.

I don't think TBM's will be really bothered about media attention in this area and see the church's stance as superior.

To them it's a massive Sin.

I was taught this by both male and female missionaries. Though the female missionaries warned me of Porn because of how I may react bodily or something like that. lol I can't remember exactly and didn't push them on the matter.

We had it in Elders Quorum talks too, especially when Spencer Kimball's teachings were being discussed.

Recorded talk on the subject, for anyone interested, though as LDS you'll have all likely gone through it at church before.
