Couldn't think of a pop-culture analogy that echoes the non-reaction of most TBMs I've spoken with about The Essays. Finally have one. Dated, but it's close.

Emily Litella. A great Gilda Radner character from Saturday Night Live in the 70's. Emily was hard of hearing. She'd comment on the Weekend News segment about "What's this I hear about the Supreme Court ruling on the Deaf Penalty? Deaf people have it hard enough." Or she'd rattle on about "violins (violence) on TV." After a minute or two Jane Curtain or Bill Murray would break in, tell Emily it wasn't "Soviet jewelry" but "Soviet Jewry", and Emily would look at the camera and explain

"Oh. That's different. Never mind."

Think if the next Essay broke the news that ... I dunno ... Joseph Smith was commanded by God to not only bang teen-aged girls but also their brothers the echo from the Moridor would be an understanding

"Huh. That's different. Doesn't change the restored gospel though. Never mind."
