I am hearing a lot of TBM's getting comfort from this part of the announcement:

"At the same time, President Young said that at some future day, black Church members would “have [all] the privilege and more” enjoyed by other members."

Did Brigham Young really say this? Didn't he say things that contradicted this?

It doesn't sound like BY believe that they would ever enjoy these "privileges" in this life:

“Cain slew his brother.... and the Lord put a mark upon him, which is the flat nose and black skin. Trace mankind down to after the flood, and tehn another curse is pronounced upon the same race – that they should be the ‘servant of servants,’ and they will be, until that curse is removed; and the Abolitionists cannot help it, nor in the least alter that decree. How long is that race to endure the dreadful curse that is upon them? That curse will remain upon them, and they never can hold the Priesthood or share in it until all the other descendants of Adam have received the promises and enjoyed the blessings of the Priesthood and the keys thereof. Until the last ones of the residue of Adam’s children are brought up to that favorable position, the children of Cain cannot receive the first ordinances of the Priesthood. They were the first that were cursed, and they will be the last from whom the curse will be removed. When the residue of the family of Adam come up and receive their blessings, then the curse will be removed from the seed of Cain, and they will receive blessings in like proportion.”

- Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, v. 7, pp. 290-291;

Notice how deceptive the official Mormon statement is. It leaves out this sentence:

" Until the last ones of the residue of Adam’s children are brought up to that favorable position, the children of Cain cannot receive the first ordinances of the Priesthood."

Rather than Young's statement being a prophecy of the 1978 change, it is a FAILED prophecy, since the change occurred MUCH earlier than Young said.

(And the Mormons accuse us critics of "quoting out of context"!)

. . . the Mormon Church once taught to be true but has since broken by failing to abide by God's timeline in those previously "true" Brigham Young prophesies.

"Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when we practice to deceive."

In the previous closed threads about Steve Benson commenting on the Salt Lake Tribune article which covers the LDS Church throwing Brigham Young under the bus, someone asked for direct links to Steve's comments.

Here a few:

. . . to enjoy the blessings of the Mormon God.

This is what LDS apostle Mark E. Petersen said in that regard, quoting Young:

"You remember that Brigham Young has said, 'Cain conversed with his God every day, and knew all about the plan of creating this earth, for his father told him. But for the want of humility and through jealousy and an anxiety to possess the kingdom and to have the whole of it under his own control, and not allow anybody else the right to say one word, what did he do? He killed his brother. Then the Lord put a mark on him. When all of the other children of Adam have had the privilege of receiving the Priesthood and of coming into the kingdom of God, and of being redeemed from the four quarters of the earth, and have received the resurrection from the dead, then it will be time enough to remove the curse from his posterity. He deprived his brother the privilege of pursuing his journey through life, and of extending his kingdom by multiplying upon the earth, and because he did this, he is the LAST to share the joys of the kingdom of God.'" (emphasis added)

(Mark E. Petersen, "Race Problems--as They Affect the Church," sermon delivered at Convention of Teachers of Religion on the College Level, Brigham Young University Provo, Utah, August 27, 1954; as quoted in Jerald and Sandra Tanner, "Curse of Cain? Racism in the Mormon Church, Aooendix B, [Salt Lake City, Utah: Utah Lighthouse Ministry], pp. 104-113, at: http://www.utlm.org/onlinebooks/curseofcain_appendix_b.htm)

You see, in Mormonism, it's last the worst of all the game.

I found this in the remarks section of the Tribune Article re: Mormon Church Traces Black Priesthood Ban to Brigham Young.

Not sure what it signifies exactly. I cannot claim to be any type of historian:

Brigham Young (JD) Journal of Discourses, Vol .2, page 143.

When all the other children of Adam have had the privilege of receiving the Priesthood, and of coming into the kingdom of God, and of being redeemed from the four quarters of the earth, and have received their resurrection from the dead, then it will be time enough to remove the curse from Cain and his posterity. . . . he is the last to share the joys of the kingdom of God. (JD, vol. 2, page 143)

. . . Mormon college-level religion teachers in his "Race Problems' diatribe which he delivered at BYU in August 1954 (and which, in his sermon, he cited more fully, as noted and quoted in one of my above posts in this thread).

Typical Mormon twisting of the facts.

Brigham basically said "Blacks will get the Priesthood When Hell Freezes Over"

And the Church reports that Brigham said "Blacks will one day receive the Priesthood."

Totally fits with their policy of Testimony over Truth.

yes he said the opposite

"Let this Church which is called the kingdom of God on the earth; we will sommons the first presidency, the twelve, the high counsel, the Bishoprick, and all the elders of Isreal, suppose we summons them to apear here, and here declare that it is right to mingle our seed, with the black race of Cain, that they shall come in with with us and be pertakers with us of all the blessings God has given to us. On that very day, and hour we should do so, the preisthood is taken from this Church and kingdom and God leaves us to our fate. The moment we consent to mingle with the seed of Cain the Church must go to desstruction, -- we should receive the curse which has been placed upon the seed of Cain, and never more be numbered with the children of Adam who are heirs to the priesthood untill that curse be removed."

Speach by Gov. Young in Joint Session of the Legeslature.
