It now goes to the state House of Representatives for approval into law. There is an exemption for clergy and churches. The Morg slithering off the hook again?

I finally got why LDS, Inc. is so upset about Hawaii. They've already lost Mormon strongholds of Alberta, Washington and California, so why the big deal in Hawaii?

It's because of BYU. The entire thrust of the antigay campaign since 1993 is to avoid another Black issue, where Mormons are painted as bigots for standing against civil rights. If they just say "no sex outside of marriage", then they are safe until gays can get married. Then they have to openly state, "We don't like f@@s.

What happens when a pair of same-sex BYUH students gets married? By BYU's rules, they can live in whatever housing they like and shack up together. BYUH has to explicitly state the same-sex couples are lesser human beings despite Hawaii law and US Federal law stating that they are just as legally married Mitt and Ann Romney. Instead of having the law on their side, they now have to make policies that run counter to state law.

They probably will be within their rights to kick out gay states, but they will face political and social pressures not to. They hate being in this position, but anyone could have seen it coming for a long time now. The day of reckoning is at hand.

They used to smugly say, "we have the same rule for everyone,
no sex outside of marriage," making themselves sound
egalitarian. But they were working feverishly to make sure
same-sex marriage was kept illegal.

Now that 30% of the states have legalized marriage equality,
and that a MAJORITY of Americans are in favor of it, they will
have to look backwards and bigoted.

It's even worse for them based on demographics. The ones who
are against marriage equality tend strongly to be older
people. Younger people tend strongly to favor it. That means
that as time goes by the Morg will be further and further out
of it.

Their only consolation is that many other churches (Catholics
mainly) will also be against it. With the Blacks-and-the-
priesthood thing just about ALL the other churches were
racially equal. The Mormons, who were similar to many other
churches in the 30s and 40s found themselves alone by the 70s.

The new Pope is no gay rights advocate, but he also gets that focusing on sex while ignoring the poor is a dead end. Millions of Latinos are fleeing the Catholic Church for Evangelicals, while the church is completely obsolete in Europe. It is in serious danger in the US, where 85% of sexually active Catholics use contraception.

The Catholic Church may be better positioned than the LDS Church for this change. Francis seems focused on keeping them relevant, while Mormons are digging in their heels.

The whole Prop 8 thing should have taught them a lesson. They succeeded with that one, temporarily, but they got SMEARED in public opinion. You'd think they would just stay out of it in any public sense. I know why they think they shouldn't but do they want another metaphorical butt-kicking?

Looks like they're about to get one whether they want it or not.

I believe there is the possibility of further amendments to the Bill when it goes to the House. But as it's still made up by a majority of Democrats, I presume it will go back to Senate for final approval with no further changes.
Although I cannot believe the TSCC would give in to this so easily without one final battle, making a major amendment or stopping it in its tracks altogether someways.

Don't students have to be endorsed by a bishop and be good members in standing? If so then the church as the right to deny housing if the housing belongs to the church.

a church has the right to deny whatever rights they want, a school doesn't, even a private one that is owned by a church, if they receive public funds, and all schools do.

I was wondering about this. I'll take your word for it. That really puts them in a pinch, eh?

I am nearly 100% sure that the Mormon Church Universities DO NOT receive certain public funds, especially from federal and state governments. There are many laws and regulations that would choke the Church. To accept those types of funding would FORCE TSCC to abide by all anti-discriminatory laws etc.

Funding of Church universities is done 100% via fund raising, non-profit donations, tuition and primarily from LDS INC.'s vast wealth in tithing donations. The result is complete control of policies and procedures uninhibited by the coercion of federal and state policies. The second they allow funding from public governmental sources would be the moment they give up control - and that will never happen.

Remember that RFM thread a while ago? LDS INC. in Canada is required by law to disclose where it's collected monies is spent. If I remember correctly, out of about $120 million dollars, nearly $100 million went to fund BYU. TSCC will take from the tithe payers the monies necessary to keep their institutions free of governmental assistance just to insure its ongoing 100% control over its rules, regulations and policies.

How very depressing, but you are probably correct. These SL bast--ds, with their vast money mountain and their army of lawyers, have complete and unapposed control over BYU policies and its students. Looks like these Mormon fuc-s have every angle covered yet again.

The Mormon church has always made a big deal about no longer accepting federal funds because of the BYU off-campus housing thing that went to court. It would appear that unless they were completely weaned from federal funds, they would be unable to make the absurd demands on Provo landlords to obey the Off-Campus Housing Office.

(I owned two off-campus student units in Provo. God, it was awful. If a girl tenant sleeps with her boyfriend in your apartment, you, the landlord, can get blackballed, even if you live in a different part of the world.)

So they don't accept funding so they can remain bigots. Got it.

The church legally can bar gay students. They are afraid of the political and social consequences.

If this were a movie that title would be:

Can't be long now before two dizzy and wildly in love gay Mormon boys are kneeling at the Altar of the Temple Sealing Rooms, full of emotion and expectation, tearfully holding each others perspiring hand in the patriarchal grip, as misty eyed, their marriage is sealed, are bestowed all the blessings of heaven and eternity, and both are pronounced Eternal partners in the Celestial Kingdom of the Mormon God. How many of the two faced, pious and bigoted Mormon crowd would be able to stomach this prospect?

Same here in Washington. Last November one of our ballot questions was whether to allow clergy to make up their own minds essentially. It passed, so I guess clergy can decide what gay couples they'll marry or not. Interesting. I am just waiting for the first lawsuit.

This is a completely bogus issue. Clergy can refuse to marry anyone for any reason at all. Always could.

A judge or Justice of the Peace, to the best of my knowledge, must marry anyone who is legally entitled to be married.

Folks, whatever happens in the final vote, TSCC will crawl out of their Mormon sludge holes smelling of 1st degree celestial excrement. They will regroup and survive to fight yet another day, like flies round shi-e!
