John the revelator was definitely on a bad trip on the island of Patmos, I would say.
The complex relationship between the different portions of the Revelation recorded by John, as well as the way the text dovetails with the visions of Daniel in the O.T. suggest an incredible depth of understanding unlikely to be possible while "high." The metaphors are too complex for the "bad trip" theory.
If you get the chance, read Dr. Barnhouse's commentary on the Revelation. It's a classic.
