Seriously, I wouldn't be a bit surprised to find out that ingesting some sort of psychotropic substance was part of the ceremonial ritual for many biblical characters (assuming they were real folks and not myths). Or, alternatively, perhaps they were suffering from manic-depression (which often includes religiously toned hallucinations) or epilepsy (similar to Karen Armstrong's "visions" of hell in the nunnery). John the revelator was definitely on a bad trip on the island of Patmos, I would say.

As far as the spooky shit, I think our societal lack of these phenonemon is due to the medical advances we have made (ie, now we know someone is having an epileptic fit, rather than a demonic possession).

There never is any shred of material evidence for the claims of the visionary... whether they are having UFO visions, or seeing Jesus in a spaghetti billboard. Hmmmm, guess that's a clue, eh?
