I did not understand "The Apostle" starring Robert Duval. Perhaps I was just asleep in the back row? My wife didn't get it either. Duval's performance was outstanding but what was the point of the movie? I know that Duval himself (he starred, wrote, and directed it) is a devout Christian so I guess he is saying that Christianity is a good thing, but that is not the impression I got from the flick.

Am I the only one who didn't get it? Can someone explain in 50 words or less what I missed?

I don't know about the 50-word limit, but I found the film fascinating. I didn't see any message about Christianity per se, but just a character study of a flawed man; flawed, but nevertheless completely sincere in his religious beliefs. Maybe Duvall wanted to point out that one can be a good Christian without being a saint. The Apostle character, as complex as he is, certainly can't be called a hypocrite - and maybe Duvall wanted to point that out too.

Then again, I may be all wrong. When I was in humanities classes, I never could "get" what the artists were supposedly trying to convey to me through their paintings.

(BTW, I can't comment on the Truman story until it comes out on video. A colicky(sp?) baby and two year old don't make it easy to go to the movies anymore.)

This too shall pass. As tough as a cranky baby is, I think I would trade you straight up for my 16-year old son right now. :)
