: I saw The Truman Show this weekend. It was at least as good as last summer's, Contact--maybe even better. The best line of the movie comes about halfway through when Truman, age 37 (?) is just starting to figure out that his life is a fraud:
: Entertainment reporter questions the producer of The Truman Show (played by Ed Harris): "Why has it taken Truman so long to discover that his life is a television program?"
: Ed Harris responds: "Because we accept the reality we are presented with."
: I think that the people who see this movie as commentary on the media's violation of privacy are folks who have never been belivers in one world-view and then later discovered that it was a hoax. IMO, the movie is much more a metaphor about beliefs vs. reality--and the dilema of sticking to your beliefs because they are safe, but at the expense of facing reality.
"Ed Harris responds: "Because we accept the reality we are presented with.""
I agree with you.
Well chosen moment from the script. It defined the fundemental meaning of the movies intent. There are sure to follow a wave of similarly intended movies. At least I hope so.
This has nothing to do with the movie, but that line on reality brings to mind a quote from Shakespear's Hamlet:
"There is more to Heaven and Earth than our philosophies will allow us to see."
