Actually, this 'friend' is also a relative. Should I broach my real thoughts on Mormonism with him, things with extended family members would go from bad to much worse.

Whenever we (my wife and I) have discussed the topic with friends and family members we are careful to not give any details. When pressed for details we provide a disclaimer asking something like, "do you *really* want to know the details of our studies even though you are happy in the church?". So far, no one has said 'yes'. Ignorance is not only bliss for some. but it also keeps our good relationships in tact.

Ouch. Although I haven't "come out" to the extent you have, my relatives know that I have extremely unconventional views. They go out of their way to avoid substantive discussions with me about the church, evolution, etc.

The other day I was quizing a nephew as to exactly why he wanted to go on a mission, not being satisfied with the "it's expected" argument. My brother overhead the conversation and quickly interceded to prevent further thought contamination. :)
