: Why does Sorenson have to write the books? Why can't members be encouraged to just go out and buy books by the real experts like Linda Schele and Michael Coe?
I was looking for Sorenson because the defenders in my group are citing him. I want to become familiar with his work. (I'm in a good position since Stan Larson in "Quest for the Gold Plates" directly and convincingly challenges him)
As far as general membership goes, isn't it a question of intended audience? You want to give the best information possible but recommending books from Michael Coe in church might embarass or offend the local leaders or church icons. You might get booted out of your position to be replaced by Brother Boring and who would that serve? It's tempting to just walk away but then I'd have less influence with my friends and family.

How many people have gone to central America and learned things that they otherwise wouldn't have were it not for the Book of Mormon? You might claim they didn't learn as much real history and archaology as they would with some scholarly group. So what? I'm going to propose to my group of friends that we all make an excursion to these sites at the end of our trial. Some will go hoping to find old swords. Some will go to mock. Some will go to learn. But who cares? we'll be among friends having a good time. Poking into Jaredites ruins -- it beats bridge night doesn't it?
With that said, I think it would be a nice way to go, that is leave the church if I ever decide to. Just blatantly teach the truth.
