: I've been reading a commentary on the Hebrew Bible by Rabbi Telushkin. This incident is a mistake in judgment. It was obviously wrong for this man to kill his daughter. In theory, when you make an oath, or promise, you should keep your word. But one shouldn't make frivolous oaths. And when two Biblical commands appear to conflict, (should I keep my promise, or should I refrain from killing?) it should be apparent which takes precedence.

: Here is the link to the New International Version of the bible chapter in question (relevant verses are 29 through the end). Now: does this say, or not, that God followed through on his part of the "contract"? Does God rescind the agreement? I find it very convenient that in this instance the man is at fault, not God.
: A broader question: for you, is the bible infallible, or not? If not, how do you decide what is "true" and what is myth, translation errors, or whatever? If you do believe it is inerrant, how do you perform the mental gymnastics necessary to reconcile incidents such as this with your conception of God?
: I'm not trying to stir up trouble here, I'm just very curious about how Christians think.
