Yesterday, I was looking for stuff written by John L. Sorenson,
professor of Anthropology at BYU and F.A.R.M.S. dude. This, for
my ongoing debate with friends about the Book of Mormon.
His book "An Ancient American Setting for the Book of Mormon" is on
sale for $7.99 at Deseret Book.
He now has another book based on the same ideas but full of color
maps and photos. I believe the title is "Images of Ancient America -
View of Book of Mormon Life" As I thumbed through the pages looking
at some of the amazing artifacts, some subtitled [a mediterranean
looking man] or [an oriental face, possibly Korean], a measure
of my pride in the Mormon church was restored. It's nice to know
that a Mormon scholar is putting so much work into what seems to
be a beautiful and positive message.
The cost was too high. $40 But if I were a Gospel doctorine teacher,
for the BofM, I'd buy it. For one thing, these color images would
just liven up the class. Those of you who have tinkered with Mormonism know that
one of the main problems with it is boredom.
Another thing is, now we have a friendly way to get discussion started
about what kinds of evidences are there for and against the BofM.
A third benefit might be to kindle interest in the study of MesoAmerica.
When I was a kid, it seemed like there was more discussion like this, remember the
discovery of white indians in Venezuela? Now days that seems to have been
replaced faith promoting opiate.
