: From the descriptions of how to care for slaves in the OT, it seems that Hebrew slaves were treated pretty well, at least compared to other slaves at that time in history (and other times in history)
: So you think that slavery is absolutely morally wrong unless the slaves are treated pretty well?
No, I still think it's wrong. I would say that treating a slave like a human being would eventually lead you to think that you shouldn't be involved in slavery at all. But like I said, I would rather that God had told the Israelites not to have slaves at all, end of story.
: Also, in the NT it says that all are equal before God, slave & free.
: Paul (who speaks for God in the NT including the above comment about all being equal) also tells slaves how to be subject to their masters.
Well, Paul also tells them not to steal from their master, and to be a good example of Christian behavior. I don't think Paul was in a position to take on the Roman institution of slavery. I wish this whole issue would have been cleared up a long time ago, and the whole sorry issue of slavery in the South didn't happen. I'm glad that some 19th century Christians were concerned enought to work for abolishment of slavery.
