it became apparent that the kids have picked up on my cynical attitude toward this book.
Walker,
You should go through the book of Judges, chapter by chapter or story by story, and let them draw their own conclusions. You have decided that the book is a bunch of tall tales, and therefore are indoctrinating them to believe what you believe. It's OK to tell them what you believe, but you have stated plainly that they don't know the literature. They must first know the content.
You need to study it inductively. Take each passage, determine the who, when, where, and what, and put them together to see what the passage says. Then go to the next passage and do the same thing. Then compare the passages and see if they relate. That is a sound way to study any literature.
Would you study Hamlet and spend the whole time discussing whether or not it is realistic? Teach them the content that you say they don't know.
The "spiritual" lesson about the tree does, indeed, sound worthless. Let the Bible speak for itself. It will do just fine.
