The Ascent of Man, by Jacob Bronowski
The Demon Haunted World, also by Carl Sagan
The Bicentennial Man, by Isaac Asimov (actually not originally a book by itself, but later expanded into a book -- The Bicentennial Robot, with the collaboration of Robert Silverberg)
