If the original poster takes this advice they will only have to give up 10% of their income for at least a year or more, countless hours, and the receipt of buckets of subterfuge to find out an answer to their question.
In a nutshell, the garments are a symbol similar to other religious icons like rosary beads, crosses, etc. Some of the more fanatical Mormons even think that they work like some sort of Superman outfit. See the 60 Minutes interview and the link below.
