My personal belief is that we should make use of the common sense we were born with as step one. If you start doing something and it helps, then 'keep it up'. If it doesn't seem to be helping. 'Stop'. Just remember that what our forefathers did isn't necessarily good for us. Life expectancy at the turn of the century (98 years ago) was 44 years in Canada. I'm not sure about the U.S. at that time, but you're 1 or 2 years less than Canada at present so we were probably very comparable in 1900 too. Obviously, the old natural diet wasn't perfect (biggest reasons for low life expectancy though were childbirth and unavailability of medical care, and not diet).
I have found that eating raw carrots in the evening while watching TV not only keeps me from putting on more weight but it also relieves my 'acid reflux' problems at night (just dont eat anything else besides the carrots in the evening). The vitamins are just a bonus. My biggest mistake has been not drinking enough milk. I've broken ribs in 4 of the last 5 years. Men can get osteoporosis too, as they age, but many dont realise it. Increase your calcium intake while you're young to build up your skeleton. Trouble is that you've got to have plenty of vitamin D in your diet or your body can't absorb the calcium in the milk. Seems there's no simple solution and we each have to take responsibility for our own health.
