The subject of health and medicine hasn't really been discussed on the board so I thought I'd throw this out...
A few months ago I had a physical exam with a new doctor who swore up and down about the benefits of taking vitamins. He claimed that even though I was healthy now I needed to start taking a daily multi-vitamin and 400 IUs of vitamin E if I wanted to reduce my future risks of skin and other forms of cancer. I was a bit skeptical but I read up on the subject and figured I didn't have too much to lose and possibly much to gain by following his suggestions. (A year's supply of the stuff from a discount drug store ran me less than $20.)
Anyway, the following just came across the wire which says about the exact same thing that my doctor said:
Lack of vitamins may cause cancer, experts say
RESTON, Va. (Reuters) - The all-American junk food diet could be causing more than an epidemic of obesity, heart disease and diabetes. It could be giving millions of people cancer, experts say. They say overfed Americans may be fat, but they are not getting the proper nutrition - and they may pay for their bad eating habits with cancer. Poor diet could damage cells in much the same way radiation does, said Bruce Ames of the University of California at Berkeley. "Deficiency of vitamins folic acid, B12, B6, C, or E, iron or zinc and probably selenium mimics radiation in damaging DNA," Ames told this week's conference of the Society of Toxicology in Reston, Va.
