If you are in an area with a local astronomy club, the veterans there can be a big help. If you are lucky (like me) they will also provide free loaner telescopes so you can figure out what you really need/want and buy accordingly. My local organization has so many loaner scopes available that it may be years before I ever want to buy one of my own.
