I continue with my sunday school job. Last week I told the kids that Elijah probably poured gasoline on his alter while he told the crowd he was pouring water on it during his showdown with the priests of Baal.
The kids thought gasoline wasn't invented back then so I suggested there must have been some flamable liquid they were using to light their lamps with. I'm not sure who was right here.
Anyway I then told how Elijah had the 450 priests of Baal slain because they lost the wizard's duel. Later I had to tell how Elisha cursed 42 children in the name of the Lord by calling she-bears out of to woods to tear them into pieces. All this because the kids had mocked him with "Go up thou bald head".
Predictably, these attrocities were not mentioned in the lesson manual. The kids wanted to know how a prophet of god would do such things. I said I didn't know but my guess was some poor scribe who had been teased about is baldness had inserted the story to help himself feel better. One kid thought the Lord would prevent such things from happening to his book. I disagreed, pointing out Joseph Smith went to a lot of trouble to "fix" the errors in the bible.
I had some kids visiting from another class. They told me my lessons were quite tame compared to their regular teacher who went into uncomfortable detail about how Solomon went about satisfying his 700 wives. It seem no matter how radical I try to be in class, someone can top me. Oh well.
I heard Gordon B. Hinkly was going to appear on Larry King Live on Sept 6, or 8. Anyone heard that? There is also a rumor floating around that Mike Wallace is good buddies with pres. Hinckly now. Any truth to that?
