while clerics searched for the City of God, all around
: them the City of Man was in dire straits.
Perhaps one must be uncomfortable with the conditions of the present before one is willing to change them. The supremely confident Chinese sailed their fleets around the coast of Africa and were about to discover Europe when they decided there was no place like home and no reason to continue these voyages. If Europe had been that secure, perhaps no one would have left in search of a better life. Perhaps Europe needed that discomfort born of backwardness to motivate the later advances and discoveries. After all, I've heard it said that the plague was necessary to reduce the labor force to the point that skilled labor became a more valued comodity and the fuedal method of treating labor like serfs became unsustainable.
