I agree with most of what you say. It's all speculation.
However, I think it is true that while clerics searched for the City of God, all around
them the City of Man was in dire straits. The monks, following St Augustine's lead, tried to
reconcile faith with reason. The Renaissance marked the turning point when this quest was realized
to be pointless.
Some peole are still trying to combine faith and reason, but the two are completely incompatible.
