Does the fact that we see (through plate tectonics) the continents of Africa and South America moving an inch or so a year apart show that plate tectonics is a merely micro event or does it show us that the continents were once together?

I suppose watching a finch's beak *by itself* doesn't tell us much just as seeing the continents move an inch a year doesn't, but when coupled with DNA comparisons and the fossil record, it speaks volumes.
