Yes (IM-ever-so-HO). But why must the machine not have a will of its own? Why is this inconsistent with reductionism?

Or do you actually have ... the ability to "change the course of the future"...

Again, I take exception to the either/or proposition of your question. Can a finite state machine (as I believe humans are) act in an indeterminate manner? I believe so (now I better go bone up on why!)
