I asked a friend to bring me a glass of water. He, being a nice friend, brought me water.

I asked God to bring me a glass of water. He did not. I told Him I was very thirsty and I needed a glass of water. No glass of water was brought to me.

Another friend told me I lacked faith. I asked that friend if he had the faith to ask God to bring him a glass of water. He said he did. I asked if I could see it. He said God doesn't work that way. He said God won't do something for you that you can do for yourself. That seemed reasonable.

I asked how God works. He said, you have to ask with a sincere heart for something that was worthy of His attention.

So I asked that innocent children no longer be kidnapped, tortured and killed. But God didn't answer that request either.

My friend said it wasn't in God's plans.

I told this friend that maybe his God was apathetic, lazy or impotent or perhaps non-existent.

My friend laughed and assured me that God indeed existed.

Then I wanted to know why He wouldn't show himself, after all, most other people who claim to love and care about me at least write a letter now and then. Some drop in for a visit. But not God.

My friend said God talks to you in your head. Have any of you heard God talking in your head? Why is the only voice I hear mine?

I asked my friend why God didn't stretch forth his mighty hand and right the terrible injustices of the world.

My friend said God doesn't satisfy men’s curiosity that way and it was evil to seek for a sign.

I asked what was wrong with wanting to see and talk to someone who claims to be a loving Father in Heaven. What is wrong with asking for help from those in power to give it? What is wrong with wanted evidence that God is as powerful as He claims?

My friend told me to just stick to the basics like baptism, repentance and faith, and stop worrying about miracles.

So now days I don't expect a lot from God. I work with my friends I can see. Some of them deliver if I ask nicely.
