I don't think you should be afraid of talking with anyone in the Church, but I don't think you'll find a lot of concrete answers there. From what I've seen of the people on this board, they seem like a thinking, caring collection of folks. While many may have had misgivings similar to yours, they probably also have positive feelings toward many active members and some aspects of the Mormon lifestyle. I haven't seen any out and out church bashing on this board, just the honest inquiry that the name promises. I was not raised in the Mormon Church, but I have found aspects of it attractive and liberating in comprason to some of the more "mainstream" Christian paths. For my own reasons I have taken a path alien to most Mormons and Christians, but one that is not hostile to those paths. I still find illuminations in the Mormon and Christian paths though those illuminations may not be what most followers of those paths intend.
