The point is that the preacher was a devote man bu t flawed. Jesus will forgive us when we confess our sins, but we still must face the consequenses in this life. I saw a parallel to David in the Bible. David committed adultry and then had the woman's husband killed. The Apostle committed adultry which broke down his own marriage and then his wife committed adultry with the youth pastor. The wages of sin was death on many levels to all the involved characters and the church body, but the preacher went on as long as he could to make amends for his sin through works until the law caught him. The cool part was he continued to advance the gospel even in prison as evidenced in the fihnal scene on the road gang. I felt it was a brilliant piece of work showing the struggle between the holy and the profane.
